Emergency responders on Tuesday successfully contained a major fire outbreak at the Kugbo Furniture Market in Abuja, preventing extensive damage to one of the Federal Capital Territory’s largest furniture hubs.
The Federal Fire Service (FFS), working alongside the FCT Fire Service and other emergency agencies, brought the situation under control after several hours of intensive firefighting. The fire, which broke out in the early hours of the day, is suspected to have been caused by an electrical surge.
According to the FFS, the market contains highly combustible materials, raising concerns that the fire could spread rapidly if not swiftly addressed. A distress call was received at the Federal Fire Service Control Room at about 8:37 a.m., triggering an immediate response.
Firefighters from the Special Unit at the FFS National Headquarters were deployed to the scene with two high-power ground monitor appliances. An additional firefighting truck was dispatched from the Nyanya Fire Station, while the FCT Fire Service also responded promptly to support the operation.
The combined teams battled the inferno for more than three hours before successfully containing it. Their swift and coordinated intervention prevented further escalation, saving properties estimated at ₦1.8 billion, even though the total value of goods in the market is estimated at over ₦2 billion.
The Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service praised the courage, professionalism, and dedication of the firefighters involved in the operation. He stressed the importance of early reporting of emergencies, noting that prompt alerts significantly reduce losses and enable the Service to respond effectively.
He also commended the FCT Fire Service for its continued cooperation and strong partnership in joint emergency response efforts aimed at protecting lives and property.
The Federal Fire Service urged members of the public to familiarize themselves with emergency contact numbers to ensure quick response during emergencies.
