Editorial: Strategic Partnership as a Pillar of Nigeria’s Fight Against Terrorism
People’s Security Monitor (PSM) strongly supports President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to collaborate with the United States in confronting terrorism and related security threats in Nigeria. This position is anchored on a fundamental principle: the survival, stability, and corporate existence of the Nigerian state must always take precedence over all other considerations.
Terrorism remains one of the most serious dangers facing Nigeria today. Insurgency, banditry, and transnational criminal networks continue to threaten national security, economic development, and social cohesion. These threats have grown in scale and sophistication, exceeding the limits of purely local responses and demanding intelligence-led, technology-driven, and globally coordinated solutions.
In this context, cooperation between Nigeria and the United States is not a sign of weakness, but an expression of strategic foresight. Contemporary security challenges are global, and no responsible government confronts them alone. Intelligence sharing, advanced surveillance, capacity building, and operational support are essential tools for dismantling terror networks and restoring lasting peace.
It must be clearly stated that a structured bilateral security partnership does not compromise Nigeria’s sovereignty. On the contrary, it strengthens sovereignty by enhancing the state’s capacity to secure its territory, protect its citizens, and defend its institutions against violent non-state actors.
Regrettably, some unpatriotic political actors have chosen to undermine national security efforts by allegedly collaborating with agents of insecurity. Their aim is not public safety, but the perpetuation of chaos, so that insecurity can be exploited as a pathway to political power.
Such actors treat instability as political capital and human suffering as a strategy. Through sabotage and misinformation, they seek to project Nigeria as ungovernable, believing that crisis will advance their personal ambitions.
People’s Security Monitor unequivocally rejects this dangerous mindset. No political ambition is worth the blood of innocent Nigerians. National security must never be sacrificed to desperation, propaganda, or elite power struggles.
While political disagreements are normal in a democracy, they must never translate into actions that endanger national survival. The fight against terrorism should rise above partisan interests and opportunistic opposition.
Equally concerning are attempts to ethnicize or regionalize the insecurity challenge. Terrorism does not recognize ethnicity, religion, or region. Nigerians from all backgrounds are victims, and the response must be united, inclusive, and firmly national in outlook.
As Nigeria looks ahead to future general elections, peace and security remain the foundation of credible democratic processes. Elections cannot flourish in an environment of fear, displacement, and violence. Securing the nation today is an investment in democratic stability tomorrow.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu bears the constitutional responsibility to protect lives and safeguard Nigeria’s corporate existence. This duty transcends political cycles, sectional interests, and individual ambitions.
Nigeria is greater than any individual. Our freedoms, aspirations, and opportunities exist because the nation exists. The unfulfilled ambitions of a few must never be allowed to endanger the collective future of over 200 million Nigerians.
People’s Security Monitor therefore reaffirms its full support for President Tinubu’s strategic collaboration with the United States to flush out terrorists from Nigeria. National security is a sacred responsibility, and any partnership that strengthens Nigeria’s ability to protect its people is not only justified, but necessary.
