The Federal Fire Service (FFS), Gombe State Command, has issued a public safety advisory to residents of the state ahead of the Christmas and end-of-year festivities, urging strict adherence to fire prevention and general safety measures to protect lives and property.
In the advisory, the Service noted that the festive season is usually marked by increased activities such as extensive cooking, higher electricity consumption, use of decorative lighting, social gatherings, and increased vehicular movement, all of which heighten the risk of fire outbreaks, road accidents, and other preventable emergencies if not properly managed.
The Command advised residents to observe basic fire and electrical safety practices, including avoiding overloading power sockets, switching off electrical appliances when not in use, and keeping flammable materials away from heat sources. It also stressed the need for proper supervision during cooking, safe handling of gas cylinders, careful use of generators in well-ventilated areas, and responsible fuel storage. Motorists were urged to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and to avoid speeding, reckless driving, and driving under the influence of alcohol.
The FFS further encouraged organisers of public events and worship centres to ensure emergency exits are accessible and unobstructed, while households and public facilities were advised to keep basic firefighting equipment where available. In the event of an emergency, residents were urged to contact the Fire Service through the FFS Headquarters Control Room on 080-320-03557 or the Gombe State Control Room on 070-314-97455. The Service reassured the public of its readiness to respond promptly to emergencies and wished residents a peaceful Christmas and a safe New Year.
