The family of Justice Faruku Bunza of the Kebbi State High Court has disputed the claim by the Kebbi State Police Command that no ransom was paid for his release, insisting that the judge regained his freedom only after a negotiated payment of ₦50 million and other requested items.

Justice Bunza, who was abducted by armed kidnappers last week, reunited with his family on Monday after spending about a week in captivity.

In an earlier statement, the Kebbi State Police Command maintained that the judge was released without the payment of any ransom.

However, a close family member challenged the police account, alleging that the family was compelled to meet the kidnappers’ demands before the judge was freed.

According to the source, the abductors initially demanded ₦200 million but later agreed to accept ₦50 million following negotiations with the family. The source also claimed that soft drinks, biscuits and some other items requested by the kidnappers were supplied as part of the arrangement.

A relative of the judge, Malam Faruku, confirmed that Justice Bunza returned home safely and was in good health after his ordeal.

When our correspondent visited Bunza town, family members, friends and well-wishers were seen gathering at the judge’s residence to celebrate his return and offer prayers for his recovery and continued safety.

One of the judge’s brothers, who requested anonymity, said the family first saw Justice Bunza around 8 a.m. on Monday when he arrived in the community after reportedly alighting from a commercial vehicle.

“He came back safely and we are grateful to God for his return. The kidnappers initially demanded ₦200 million, but after negotiations, an agreement was reached,” the source said.

The development has again drawn attention to the persistent challenge of kidnapping for ransom in several parts of the country, with residents calling on security agencies to intensify efforts to tackle the growing threat and improve public safety.
