Navy Captain Abubakar Bakori Umar (Rtd) has urged all officers standing firm on the training fields in Kogi State to remain resolute and maintain high morale, emphasizing that this period of rigorous preparation is crucial in shaping them for the responsibilities ahead. “Keep your head high and your spirit steady,” he said, “because the training you undergo now is molding you into leaders capable of taking on greater responsibilities, demonstrating sharper discipline, and leading with courage.” According to the retired naval officer, the challenges faced on the training ground are deliberate, designed to test endurance, resilience, and mental agility, which are essential traits for security operatives today.
He highlighted the importance of every drill and instruction, stressing that they are not mere routines but vital components in building the confidence and competence officers need to perform their duties effectively. “Each drill, each challenge, each instruction is constructing the foundation of your professionalism,” Captain Umar said. “It is through these repeated exercises that you develop the skills, focus, and courage necessary to serve both your community and your nation with distinction.” His advice underscores the critical role that structured and disciplined training plays in developing operational excellence within Nigeria’s Vigilante Groups.
Captain Umar also stressed the necessity of vigilance and alertness at all times, noting that officers must remain disciplined and united. “Stay alert, stay disciplined, stay united,” he reminded them. According to him, cohesion among officers is as important as individual capability, and any lapse in discipline could compromise the effectiveness of the team. He cited historical examples where strong unity and adherence to training principles allowed security teams to overcome significant threats, reinforcing the idea that collective strength is a force multiplier in community protection.
In discussing the broader role of Vigilante officers, Captain Umar reminded trainees that they carry the pride of their local communities and the trust of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria. “Remember that you are not just serving yourself, but your community, your state, and the country at large,” he said. He emphasized that public trust is earned through consistent demonstration of integrity, courage, and professionalism. Statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics show that community-based security initiatives have reduced petty crimes by over 20% in areas with active vigilance patrols, illustrating the real impact disciplined officers can make.
Captain Umar encouraged officers to view challenges as opportunities for growth and to embrace continuous learning. “Your effort today prepares you for the duties ahead. Keep pushing, keep learning, keep growing,” he said. He noted that the training not only improves physical fitness and operational skill but also fosters critical thinking and leadership qualities. For example, officers who successfully complete advanced tactical training programs have consistently performed 30% better in field assignments, according to internal reports from the Vigilante Group of Nigeria.
Concluding his address, Captain Umar reminded all officers that their excellence is already visible and that the commitment they show on the training field will define their future impact in protecting communities. “Your dedication, resilience, and adherence to discipline are already showing,” he affirmed. He called on them to maintain high standards, hold each other accountable, and remain steadfast in service. In his words, “The nation and your communities are counting on you. You are the next generation of leaders in community security, and every lesson you learn today will shape the difference you make tomorrow.”
