Security has been tightened across Awka metropolis and its environs as Anambra State braces for the governorship election scheduled for November 8.
A correspondent who monitored activities across the state, observed a calm atmosphere amid increased security deployment.
Armed personnel were stationed around the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Awka, where vehicular traffic was diverted through alternative routes. Along the Nibo–Nise axis in Awka South Local Government Area, security officers maintained presence at key points while ensuring smooth pedestrian and vehicular movement.
Mrs. Ifeoma Egbo, a trader at Eke Awka Market, said the visible security presence and air surveillance heightened public tension. She noted that some voters, particularly the elderly, might be discouraged from coming out due to the heavy deployment.
Another trader, Mrs. Grace Anagor, said business activities were unusually brisk as residents rushed to make purchases ahead of election day. She, however, welcomed the tight security arrangement, describing it as a sign of government readiness.
Anagor urged security operatives to conduct themselves professionally and treat citizens with respect.
Earlier, security agencies had announced the deployment of about 60,000 personnel across 5,720 polling units in the state. INEC also confirmed a 98.8 percent collection rate of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the polls.
