National Assembly Hails Fire Service Reforms, Backs New Fire Safety Bill

The Federal Fire Service (FFS) has earned commendation from the National Assembly’s Committee on Safety Standards and Regulations for its sustained commitment to public safety, protection of lives and property, and advancement of Nigeria’s national fire safety agenda. The commendation came during a public hearing at the National Assembly, where the Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Olumode Adeyemi Samuel, presented the Service’s reform agenda and outlined areas requiring legislative collaboration and policy support.

In his remarks, the Committee Chairman, Hon. David Idris Zakaria, praised the Fire Service for its dedication to safeguarding lives and property nationwide. He noted that the Committee had strengthened internal safety mechanisms within the Assembly complex, including the designation of the car park area as an official muster point for emergency response.

Hon. Zakaria reaffirmed that the Committee’s mandate aligns closely with that of the Federal Fire Service—both committed to protecting Nigerians and enhancing national safety. He emphasized the importance of sustained partnership between the legislature and the Fire Service to ensure efficient fire prevention, preparedness, and response systems across the country.

During the interactive session, members of the Committee expressed keen interest in the Federal Fire Service’s operations, reform strategies, and challenges. They also requested updates on the Federal Fire Service Bill currently under legislative review and pledged their full support to ensure its timely passage into law.

The Committee further assured its readiness to collaborate with the Federal Fire Service on the development and implementation of the National Fire Safety Code as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen safety standards, improve oversight, and promote a culture of prevention nationwide.
