Terrorists Launch Midnight Attack on Borno Military Base, Four Soldiers Killed

Four Nigerian soldiers lost their lives while five others were injured when Boko Haram terrorists launched a fierce midnight attack on a military post in Ngamdu, along the Damaturu–Maiduguri highway in Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State.

The assault, which occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Friday, saw the insurgents deploy rocket-propelled grenades, armed drones, and improvised explosive devices in a coordinated attempt to overrun the base.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for Operation Hadin Kai, Lt. Col. Uba Sani, said troops on the ground, supported by reinforcements from the 29 Task Force Brigade, repelled the attackers after a fierce gun battle.

He explained that the terrorists employed rocket-propelled grenades, armed drones, and command-initiated explosive devices targeting both troops and their platforms. Despite the intensity of the assault, the troops held their positions and responded with superior firepower, inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy.

Sani disclosed that four soldiers were killed in action while five others sustained injuries, and several mine-resistant ambush protected vehicles and gun trucks suffered varying degrees of damage during the encounter.

He added that the terrorists attempted to block reinforcements by planting multiple explosives along the Ngamdu–Damaturu Main Supply Route, forcing a temporary shutdown of the highway. Engineers swiftly cleared three explosive-laden spots, and the route has since been reopened for both military and civilian movement.

According to him, credible intelligence indicated that the terrorists suffered heavy losses, with reports of mass burials involving at least fifteen bodies around the Bula Wura area near Wasaram.

He further stated that troops had been resupplied with critical logistics, including vehicle tyres and ammunition, to sustain ongoing operations in the area. Normalcy is being restored as forces continue clearance operations to maintain peace and security.

Meanwhile, motorists and commuters experienced gridlock along the Damaturu–Maiduguri highway following the attack, as soldiers conducted post-operation security checks. A supervisor with Borno Express, a commercial transport company, Muktar Yahaya, confirmed that several of the company’s buses were stranded for hours due to the heightened military presence. He said many of their vehicles were stuck on the road overnight because of security checks around Ngamdu and that by Friday morning, movement had resumed gradually but several passengers were delayed.
