The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Jigawa State Command, has confirmed the death of a 15-year-old boy, Sunusi Abubakar, who drowned in a pond at Gabari village, Chamo District.
According to reports, the teenager was discovered lifeless on Wednesday morning, October 1, 2025, inside the pond locally known as “Mahayin Gidan Toro”, located about 1.5 kilometers north of Gabari village.
His belongings shoes and trousers were spotted by the river bank on Tuesday evening, September 30, 2025. His father, Abubakar Musa Gabari, revealed that Sunusi had gone swimming at about 5:00 p.m. that day but never returned home. A community search effort continued through the night until his body was found the following morning.
The corpse, which bore no signs of injury, was handed over to the family for burial in line with Islamic rites.
In a statement, the NSCDC Jigawa Command appealed to parents, guardians, and community leaders to caution children and youths against swimming in unsafe open water bodies, stressing the need for vigilance to prevent similar tragedies.
The State Commandant, Muhammad Kabiru Ingawa, reassured residents of the Corps’ unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Jigawa State.
