Police Deny Torturing Sowore, Clarify Bandaged Arm Controversy, Prepare for Court Proceedings

The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed allegations that human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, was tortured while in custody.

A viral photograph showing Sowore with a bandaged arm circulated widely on Thursday, sparking claims of police brutality. Sowore, who is under investigation for alleged offences including forgery, cyberstalking, and other infractions, was arrested on Wednesday after honouring an invitation to the Force Headquarters. He was released on Friday night.

In a statement issued Friday evening, the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said Sowore was never subjected to “any form of inhuman treatment” during his detention. Adejobi described the viral image as “mischievously presented to mislead the public and stir unwarranted outrage.”

According to him, the bandage was part of Sowore’s personal belongings when he arrived at the Police Headquarters, before his arrest and detention. He added that upon learning that Sowore was later seen wearing the bandage in custody, the Inspector-General of Police ordered an internal investigation to determine how he had access to it, especially since the activist had “consistently refused medical examination” by independent medical teams deployed by the Police.

“This proactive measure underscores the IGP’s commitment to transparency, professionalism, and adherence to custodial protocols,” Adejobi stated.

The Force PRO confirmed that Sowore is expected to appear in court in the coming days to face the charges against him in what he described as “a lawful and transparent judicial process.
