Commander John Attah Onoja, Head of the NSCDC Special Mining Marshals, has been honoured by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, for his patriotism, unwavering dedication, and outstanding service in protecting Nigeria’s mineral resources. The recognition came during an award ceremony organised by the union in Abuja.

The event, which took place in Abuja, served as both recognition of Onoja’s personal sacrifices and a tribute to the visionary leadership of the NSCDC Commandant General, Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi. Commander Onoja credited Professor Audi with initiating the Special Mining Marshals, a unit that has made significant strides in tackling illegal mining.

During his acceptance remarks, Onoja praised Professor Audi as a “transformational leader, courageous reformer, and true patriot,” acknowledging him as the driving force behind the establishment of the Special Mining Marshals. He noted that the unit has played a crucial role in disrupting illegal mining operations, preserving mineral wealth, and restoring order in Nigeria’s extractive sector.

“This award, first and foremost, belongs to the man whose vision gave life to the Special Mining Marshals. Professor Audi not only conceived this initiative but equipped us with the strategy, tools, and moral support needed to succeed. His leadership has been the bedrock of our achievements,” Onoja said.

He also took a moment to express his sincere appreciation to the leadership of the NUJ FCT Council for considering him worthy of such a prestigious recognition. “I am deeply humbled by this honour. I thank the NUJ FCT Council for acknowledging our sacrifices and the work we do, often in silence and under great risk,” he said.

Onoja also spoke candidly about the risks involved in his role. As the lead officer in charge of field operations, often in remote and hostile environments, which he described as facing daily threats including armed attacks, ambushes, and life-threatening confrontations.

“These aren’t just petty criminals. We’re facing highly organized syndicates with money and weapons. I’ve personally survived close encounters with armed assailants, and several of my men have been injured or threatened. This is more than law enforcement; it’s a battle of courage and conviction,” he explained.

He highlighted the mental and emotional toll of operating in harsh terrains such as forests, mountains, and border regions where his officers work tirelessly to intercept stolen resources. Despite these dangers, he reaffirmed his commitment to the mission, stating that Professor Audi’s trust has remained a powerful source of inspiration.

“My resilience comes from knowing I carry out the vision of a leader who refuses to watch Nigeria get robbed in silence. I dedicate this award to Professor Audi and to every brave officer standing beside me in this mission.”

In her keynote address, Comrade Grace Ike, Chairperson of the NUJ FCT Council, emphasized the significance of Commander Onoja’s selection for the honour. She described him as a man of integrity, courage, and professionalism, an exceptional public servant who has consistently gone above and beyond the call of duty.

“At a time when Nigeria is bleeding from unchecked resource theft, it is officers like Commander Onoja who are holding the line. His bravery, discipline, and quiet patriotism speak volumes. The NUJ chose to honour him because of the battles he fights daily often away from the spotlight, but always in service to the nation,” Ike stated.

She also revealed that the NUJ had conducted a comprehensive review of field reports, community feedback, and operational achievements of public officers nationwide, with Onoja standing out consistently for his results-driven approach and selfless service.

“This is more than an award. It is a national endorsement of sincerity, sacrifice, and effectiveness. Commander Onoja’s efforts in protecting our natural wealth are both commendable and overdue for recognition.”

Comrade Ike further called for increased media coverage of environmental crimes and mineral resource theft. She encouraged stronger collaboration between journalists and agencies like the NSCDC to expose and dismantle criminal mining operations across the country.

Commander Onoja closed his remarks by renewing his commitment to intensify operations despite ongoing risks. He expressed deep appreciation for the recognition and pledged continued loyalty to the NSCDC’s mission under Professor Audi’s leadership.

“This award is not just a trophy; it is a challenge to do more. I am honoured and determined to keep pushing forward, to fight for justice, and to uphold the dignity of honest service. With Professor Audi’s support, we will not retreat.”

As he received his award to a standing ovation, Commander Onoja stood not only as a decorated officer but as a symbol of national resilience, silent sacrifice, and principled leadership.
