Guarding Nigeria’s Wealth: Why Commander John Onoja Deserves The NUJ Media Award

In a country where national security discourse is often dominated by issues such as terrorism, banditry, and oil theft, one of the most damaging forms of economic sabotage, the criminal act of illegal mining frequently goes unnoticed. Yet, this silent menace continues to drain billions of naira from the national treasury, devastate the environment, and strengthen non-state actors in their heinous activities. Amid this largely overlooked crisis, one individual has emerged as a quiet but formidable force of resistance in person of Commander John Attah Onoja, Head of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Special Mining Marshals. His recent recognition by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council with the Prestigious Media Award is not only timely but also richly deserved.

Commander Onoja has shown uncommon commitment to the protection of Nigeria’s mineral resources, treating the assignment not just as a job but as a patriotic duty. His work has brought sanity to an industry riddled with illegality, corruption, and impunity. Across states like Kebbi, Niger, Nasarawa, and parts of the North-Central region, he has led operations that have uncovered and sealed off illegal mining sites, the latest being N1.43 trillion theft of illegal lithium in Kebbi state, arrested culprits, and smashed syndicates who for years operated freely at the expense of the Nigerian economy.

The significance of this cannot be overstated because every ton of lithium, gold, or tantalite stolen by unregulated actors translates to huge losses in national revenue, job opportunities, and environmental sustainability.

More than just a security officer, Commander Onoja represents a rare blend of field expertise and communication intelligence. In an age where security agencies are often accused of opacity and media silence, he has distinguished himself by consistently updating the press and the public with verified, timely, and accurate information about the activities of the Special Mining Marshals. Through strategic media engagement, he has demystified the operations of the task force, educated the public on the dangers of illegal mining, and reassured law-abiding stakeholders of the government’s commitment to due process. His media briefings and press statement are not self-promotional gimmicks; they are clear, fact-based, and impactful updates that serve both public interest and institutional accountability.

His achievements, however, have not been the product of personal effort alone. They are the result of a larger institutional framework shaped by visionary leadership and intergovernmental collaboration. The Commandant General of the NSCDC, Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi, deserves immense credit for designing and operationalizing the Special Mining Marshals as a professional, disciplined, and well-equipped task force. Under Professor Audi’s reform-driven leadership, the NSCDC has evolved from a passive security body to a proactive and dynamic national asset capable of protecting key economic sectors. Similarly, the role of Dr. Dele Alake, Minister of Solid Minerals, cannot be overlooked. His commitment to sanitizing the mining sector and enforcing regulatory standards has created the policy space and political backing needed for security operatives like Commander Onoja to function effectively.

Nigerians are beginning to recognize the importance of mineral resource security to the nation’s future. As oil revenues become less reliable and the push for economic diversification intensifies, the solid mineral sector is emerging as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s next economic phase. In this context, the work done by Commander Onoja is not just about sealing illegal sites; it is about laying the foundation for a resource-secure, economically vibrant, and globally competitive Nigeria. He is helping to position the country as a serious player in the global mining economy by ensuring that its mineral wealth is harnessed responsibly, transparently, and lawfully.

The NUJ Prestigious Media Award bestowed upon him is therefore more than a personal accolade. It is a national endorsement of strategic excellence, ethical leadership, and public service. It affirms the importance of officers who combine tactical fieldwork with effective communication, those who operate with accountability in mind, and those whose results speak louder than press releases. The media, by recognising him, is sending a clear message: Nigeria values those who work silently but impactfully for national progress.

Commander John Attah Onoja’s story is that of dedication, courage, and competence. In an environment where mediocrity is often rewarded and excellence overlooked, his recognition sets a new standard for what service to the nation should look like. He is not merely deserving of this award; he embodies the very spirit of what the award represents – truth, service, and commitment to the greater good. For a man who risks his life daily to protect what belongs to all of us, this honour is not only justified; it is overdue.
