A civil society organisation advocating for peace among Nigerians, Wazobia conflict resolution and peace advocacy initiative ( WACORPAI) led by its national president, Comrade Dr Garba Suleiman Marafa, together with a highly respected traditional ruler and the national ExCo member of the Association of licensed private security practitioners of Nigeria, Comrade Kabir Nasir Isah have all submitted memoranda/proposals, during a 2-day Senate public hearing on 1999 constitutional review, demanding recognition of civil defence core mandates by the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
According to the groups submission during the public hearing, chaired by the deputy Senate president, distinguished Senator, Barau I Jibril (Maliya), the Corps and its statutory functions should be clearly spelt out in the constitution.
The groups are also of the view that the mandates which were initially given to the Corps by the ACT of the National Assembly 2007 as amended shall equally be considered with a view to addressing its limitations by incorporating additional responsibilities like safe school project, agro rangers, mining Marshalls so as to give better service to the entire citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. They therefore called on traditional rulers, religious/ traditional leaders, civil society organisations as well as the general public to support the submission as the NSCDC is well known for its exemplary professionalism, effective public engagement, commitment to security/community policing, risk mitigation efforts, conflict resolution and above all dedication to serving both government and the populace.
The groups further reaffirmed their strong belief in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as the supreme law of the land and hope that the Senate constitutional review committee will give due considerations to their proposals and approve it.
The Northwest Senate public hearing held between Saturday and Sunday at Bristol Hotel, Kano was well attended by delegation of the NSCDC, Kano command led by head of department of Operations as well as individuals and various interest groups from across Northwestern states.
