The Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Plateau State, Ishaku Musa, has called for an end to the exploitation of minors in the state’s informal mining sector.
“No child should die for tin, columbite, or lithium,” Musa told journalists in Jos. “What’s happening in some of these unregulated mining sites is nothing short of modern slavery. Hundreds of children are currently engaged in artisanal mining in Plateau, often working longer hours than adults for less than 500 naira a day. We will not tolerate it.”
The Musa’s warning comes amid growing evidence that children, some as young as eight, are working under dangerous conditions in mining hubs across Plateau including Barkin Ladi, Bokkos, and Wase. Many are forced to scavenge for mineral scraps in unstable pits, often without safety gear or supervision.
“These are not just child labourers,” Musa said. “These are children at risk of death, disease, and lifelong trauma. It’s illegal. It’s inhumane. And it must stop.”
