CDS REAFFIRMS NIGERIA COMMITMENT TO GLOBAL PEACE AT UN PEACEKEEPERS DAY COMMEMORATION

The Chief of Defence Staff ( CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to global peace and multilateral cooperation during his address at the 2025 International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers commemoration, held in Abuja today 28 May 2025. Speaking further, General Musa described the event as a solemn and significant occasion to honour the brave men and women who serve, and have served, in peacekeeping operations around the world under the United Nations flag.

“The International Day of UN Peacekeepers is not merely ceremonial,” he said. “It is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have dedicated their lives to the noble cause of global peace and security. It also reaffirms our shared commitment to the ideals upon which the United Nations was founded.” This year’s theme, “Fit for the Future, Building Better Together,” strongly resonates with Nigeria’s approach to peacekeeping, multilateralism, and global cooperation. General Musa emphasized that no nation can effectively address today’s complex security challenges—ranging from terrorism to pandemics alone. He reiterated the necessity for joint action, unity of purpose, and respect for the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter.

“Nigeria has remained a steadfast contributor to UN peacekeeping efforts since independence,” General Musa noted. “Our troops have served with honour and distinction in numerous conflict zones, earning Nigeria a respected position as one of Africa’s leading contributors to UN missions.” The CDS also praised the professionalism and integrity of Nigerian peacekeepers serving as contingents, observers, mediators, and commanders in various missions. Additionally, he stressed that the Armed Forces of Nigeria are continually adapting to the dynamic global threat landscape under his leadership vision: “to nurture a professional armed forces of Nigeria that is people-centric, capable of meeting its constitutional responsibilities in a joint and collaborative environment.”

He also reaffirmed the military’s commitment to deepening cooperation with the United Nations not only in peacekeeping but also in disaster response, civil-military engagement, and sustainable development. Finally, General Musa expressed heartfelt appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his steadfast support. He also paid tribute to all peacekeepers, especially fallen Nigerian heroes, whose sacrifices have laid the foundation for a more peaceful world. “We salute their courage and honour their legacy,” he said.
