A call has gone to the Federal Government to, as matter of necessity, increase funding for the NSCDC in order to enhanced its operational capacity.
A female lawyer and human rights activist, Iyanu Olumuagun, made this call while delivering a public lecture titled: “The Role of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Protecting Human Rights in Ekiti State”. The Lecture was organised by the NSCDC, Ekiti State Command.
Olumuagun who is also the Vice Chairman of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ikere-Ekiti branch also advocated additional training on human rights and rules of engagement for NSCDC personnel.
The Chairperson, Human Rights Committee of the branch, acknowledged that NSCDC plays a vital role in protecting human rights in Ekiti State, adding that the command has demonstrated its commitment to upholding human rights through its prompt response to human rights abuses, provision of security for vulnerable groups, and collaboration with human rights organizations.
The female Lawyer identified corruption, lack of funding and training shortfalls as the major factors responsible for the negligence of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC to human rights cases.
She stated that these factors have disabled the corps from enhancing its operational capacity towards responding effectively to human rights issues.
