
The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 6 Division, Nigerian Army (NA), Major General Emmanuel Eric Emekah has called for the entrenchment of maintenance culture in handling facilities in Port Harcourt Barracks. He made the call when he commissioned a newly renovated block of 10 Flats at 76 Supply and Transport Brigade Corporal Below Quarters (CBQ), today 21 February 2025.
Major General Emekah further disclosed that the project was commissioned in line with the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede’s “Soldiers First” mantra as well as his command philosophy, which prioritized the welfare of the soldiers. He added that the Division commissioned officers’ transit accommodation at 29 Battalion a few days ago, and another project, a CBQ was commissioned today. All these he averred, were attributed to the transformation drive of the COAS.
He thanked the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director (MD), of Kenyon International West Company Limited, Mr Victor Ekpenyong for his intervention as part of his company’s Corporate Social Responsibility. He charged commanders of various formations and units to always add value to their respective commands. While, commending the Commander, 76 Supply and Transport Brigade, he urged the beneficiaries to have a maintenance culture, adding that they should leave the accommodation in such a way that the next occupants will enjoy the facilities provided.
Speaking earlier, the Commander, of 76 Supply and Transport Brigade, Brigadier General Kingsley Inyang stated that the renovation work was conceived and implemented under the COAS “Soldier First” mantra. He pointed out that the project was intended to enhance the welfare and administration of 76 Supply and Transport personnel.
Brigadier General Inyang further reiterated that the project was not only about the welfare and administration of soldiers, but would also serve as an enabler for the realisation of the GOC 6 Division mission statement. He used the opportunity to express his appreciation to the COAS for his strategic guidance and the GOC for his tremendous support. He also thanked the CEO/MD, Kenyon for his intervention that brought the project to a successful completion. He however warned that the command will not tolerate any act of misusing the facilities by the occupants.
Relatedly, the GOC played host to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), where he had a fruitful engagement with the Zonal Director, of South South Zone, Dr Godwin Tepikor. The Zonal Director informed the GOC of the 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) and 2025 Annual Flood Outlook (AFO) by the Nigerian Meteorological (NiMet) Agency.
The GOC informed the Zonal Director of the need for NEMA to involve troops of the Division in disaster management training. He further called on the outfit to share information on NiMet predictions to enable the Division ‘develop its contingency plan. The GOC reassured NEMA of the partnership in the region.
The engagement focused on deepening collaboration between 6 Division and NEMA for effective operations, particularly on how to mitigate disasters in the region. It ended with a commitment to a robust partnership between the two institutions.
