GOC 3 DIVISION URGES TRADITIONAL LEADERS TO COLLABORATE IN COMBATING INSECURITY IN PLATEAU STATE

In a significant move towards addressing the pressing security challenges in Plateau State, Major General Folusho Oyinlola, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division and Commander of Operation SAFE HAVEN, paid a courtesy visit to the Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Dr. Jacob Buba Gyang, at his palace in Jos. The visit emphasized the crucial role of traditional institutions in fostering peace and resolving conflicts in the region.

During the visit, Major General Oyinlola called upon the traditional rulers to lend their support in a concerted effort to tackle the cycle of violence that has plagued Plateau State. He stated, “As the Chairman of the Plateau State Council of Traditional Rulers and Emirs, your leadership is instrumental in paving the way towards lasting peace in this region. I want to take this moment to acknowledge your immense contributions thus far and solicit your support in our collective endeavor to achieve a peaceful and prosperous Plateau State.”

Acknowledging the multifaceted nature of insecurity, Major General Oyinlola proposed a dual approach to addressing the issue, advocating for the implementation of both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies. He highlighted the necessity of empowering traditional leaders, asserting that their involvement is essential in de-escalating tensions before they escalate into major conflicts. Furthermore, he extended an invitation to the Gbong Gwom for an upcoming stakeholders meeting organized by Operation SAFE HAVEN, underscoring the importance of collaboration among all relevant parties.

In response, Gbong Gwom Jos Da Dr. Jacob Buba Gyang expressed his gratitude for the visit and affirmed his confidence in the GOC’s capability to address the security challenges plaguing the state. “We acknowledge and appreciate all your sacrifices to ensure Nigeria blossoms again,” he remarked, commending the dedication of military personnel and security agencies in maintaining peace and order.

While the meeting provided a platform for discussing security concerns, Dr. Gyang also raised alarms about other pressing issues affecting the state. He lamented the rise of illegal mining activities, describing it as a significant contributor to the alarming rate of school dropouts in Plateau. Additionally, he addressed the growing threat of child trafficking in the region, categorizing it as a “monster that has found its way into our communities here in Plateau.” He called for urgent government intervention to tackle these emerging threats while pledging his unwavering support to security agencies in their quest to ensure the safety of all residents.

The Gbong Gwom further assured Major General Oyinlola of the readiness of traditional rulers to collaborate with the military in finding lasting solutions to the region’s security issues. “We are all in this together,” he said, emphasizing the shared responsibility in fostering a peaceful environment.

The occasion was also marked by the presence of first-class rulers, members of the traditional council, military commanders, and staff officers from Headquarters 3 Division and Operation SAFE HAVEN. The event concluded with the presentation of mementos and group photographs, symbolizing a united front in the ongoing battle against insecurity in Plateau State.

As the security landscape in Plateau continues to evolve, the collaboration between traditional institutions and military leadership could prove pivotal in shaping a safer future for the state. Both the GOC and the Gbong Gwom have expressed a shared commitment to foster peace, signaling hope for the diverse communities in the state. The ongoing dialogue exemplifies a proactive approach to conflict resolution, highlighting the necessity of partnerships in overcoming adversity.
