The Nigerian Navy, in collaboration with local divers and members of the Abedigbene Fishing Community, has rescued seven passengers following a boat accident in the waters of Abedigbene, Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The incident occurred on 5 November 2026 and involved a passenger boat travelling from Yenagoa to Akassa with eight persons on board.
Personnel of the Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) Formoso, following a distress alert from a local fisherman, swiftly mobilised from Labrador Lagosgbene Houseboat and commenced search and rescue operations with the assistance of community divers and local residents.
Among those rescued were Bayelsa State Commissioner for Trade, Industry and Investment, Dr Ebieri Jones, an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and five other passengers. The survivors were taken to the houseboat, where they received first aid. Preliminary assessments indicated that none had sustained visible injuries.
However, one passenger, identified as a police officer, remained missing as search and rescue operations continued. On 6 November, the commissioner and the six other survivors were conveyed to Yenagoa to reunite with their respective families.
The operation underscores the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to maritime safety, protection of lives and prompt response to emergencies within its area of responsibility. The Commanding Officer of FOB Formoso commended the personnel for their swift response and professionalism, while acknowledging the invaluable contributions of local divers and the host community.
The successful rescue also highlights the importance of collaboration between security agencies and coastal communities in strengthening maritime safety and responding effectively to emergencies on Nigeria’s waterways.
