Nigerian Armed Forces Retire 656 Senior Officers

The Nigerian Armed Forces on Thursday celebrated the retirement of 656 senior non-commissioned officers who have served the nation for 35 years.

The colorful ceremony, held at the Nigerian Armed Forces Resettlement Centre (NAFRC) in Oshodi, marked the culmination of a six-month demilitarization training program aimed at preparing the retirees for civilian life. The retiring officers included 535 personnel from the Nigerian Army, 86 from the Nigerian Navy, 35 from the Nigerian Air Force, and two from the Defence Intelligence Agency.

Speaking at the event, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Hasan Abubakar, commended the retirees for their invaluable contributions to national peace and security. He noted that the training had equipped them with the skills needed to transition into civilian life as resourceful managers, entrepreneurs, and contributors to national development.

Reflecting on the resilience and legacy of the armed forces, Abubakar quoted the popular military saying, “Soja come, soja go, but barracks remain.” He urged the retirees to maintain the discipline, courage, and commitment that defined their military careers, becoming role models and ambassadors of the armed forces in their communities.

“As you move into civilian life, I encourage you to embrace this new chapter with confidence,” Abubakar said, adding that their extensive training and experience would support a seamless transition.

NAFRC Commandant, Air Vice Marshal Babatunde Mamman, highlighted the centre’s pivotal role in preparing retiring officers for life after military service. He noted that NAFRC had trained over 51,000 personnel, equipping them with self-reliance and managerial skills.

The event concluded with tributes to the retirees’ dedication and a call for them to uphold the values instilled in them throughout their military careers.
