The Independent Investigative Committee established by the Federal Government to probe the deaths of 37 alleged illegal miners has requested an additional two weeks to conclude its assignment and submit a comprehensive report.
Chairman of the committee, retired Deputy Director General of the State Security Service (SSS), Jonathan Kure, made the disclosure during a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday.Kure said the extension became necessary to enable the panel to thoroughly review all evidence, examine relevant findings, and ensure that its final report meets the highest standards of credibility and accuracy.
According to him, the committee remains committed to conducting a transparent and objective investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the miners, whose demise sparked widespread public concern and demands for accountability.
He noted that the extra time would allow members of the panel to complete outstanding aspects of their work, reconcile submissions from stakeholders, and produce recommendations capable of preventing similar incidents in the future.
The investigative committee was constituted by the Federal Government to uncover the facts surrounding the tragedy and determine any lapses or misconduct that may have contributed to the deaths, with its findings expected to guide subsequent government actions.
