Nigeria and Bangladesh have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation in maritime security, defence development, professional training, technology transfer and naval shipbuilding following a high-level meeting between the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) of the Nigerian Navy and the High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Nigeria, His Excellency Mr. Miah Md Mainul Kabir.

During the engagement, the Bangladeshi High Commissioner emphasized his country’s readiness to deepen collaboration with the Nigerian Navy in critical areas, including maritime security operations, professional military education, technology exchange, naval shipbuilding and defence-industrial development. He noted that the longstanding cordial relationship between Nigeria and Bangladesh provides a strong foundation for broader strategic cooperation capable of delivering tangible benefits to both nations.

In his response, the Chief of the Naval Staff expressed appreciation to the High Commissioner and his delegation for the visit, describing it as a significant step towards strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries. He highlighted Nigeria’s extensive operational experience in combating piracy, sea robbery and other maritime crimes in the Gulf of Guinea, noting that such expertise presents valuable opportunities for professional exchanges and mutual learning.

The Naval Chief further stressed the need for stronger collaboration among navies across the world to effectively tackle evolving maritime threats that often transcend national boundaries. He also referenced Nigeria’s participation in multinational maritime security initiatives, including engagements with the Combined Maritime Task Force, as a model that could be adapted to address security challenges in other maritime regions, including the border areas between Myanmar and Bangladesh.

Discussions also focused on expanding cooperation in professional training, naval technology, shipbuilding and indigenous defence production. The Nigerian Navy expressed interest in learning from Bangladesh’s globally recognized garment manufacturing sector as part of efforts to enhance local production of military uniforms and related materials. Both sides equally explored opportunities for technical collaboration in naval shipbuilding and maritime industrial development.

The meeting concluded with an invitation to the Chief of the Naval Staff to undertake an official visit to Bangladesh to further consolidate ongoing discussions and explore additional areas of partnership. The engagement underscored the commitment of both countries to sustained cooperation aimed at strengthening maritime security, enhancing professional and technical capacity, promoting indigenous defence-industrial growth and advancing mutually beneficial bilateral relations.
