I recently came across your article and felt compelled to share my thoughts. Having carefully read the piece, I must commend the professionalism, clarity, and depth of analysis reflected in your presentation.
One observation I would like to make is that the military has cultivated a strong culture of unity, mutual support, and institutional confidence, often associated with the philosophy of Ubuntu. This culture has enabled it to effectively articulate its concerns and advocate for its interests when necessary. By contrast, many paramilitary agencies appear less assertive in projecting their importance and addressing issues that affect their personnel and operations.
The military has traditionally demonstrated the confidence to engage authority on matters of welfare, operational needs, and national security concerns, while paramilitary organizations often adopt a more reserved approach. However, institutions earn respect and recognition when they consistently demonstrate their value and communicate their contributions effectively.
It is important to emphasize that paramilitary agencies are not established to compete with the military. Rather, they are designed to complement the military within Nigeria’s broader security architecture. Their mandates are distinct but equally important in maintaining internal security, protecting critical national assets, managing borders, enforcing laws, and providing essential public safety services.
The National Defence Policy of 2005 recognizes paramilitary organizations as the third line of defence, highlighting their strategic role in the nation’s security framework. Their contributions remain indispensable to the maintenance of peace, stability, and national development.
As the popular saying goes, the strength of a chain is determined by its weakest link. This principle applies equally to national security. A strong and effective security system depends on the collective strength of all its institutions, with each agency receiving the support and recognition necessary to perform its responsibilities effectively.
For this reason, I strongly align with your position that the President should extend the same level of attention, support, and institutional recognition accorded to other security agencies to the paramilitary services. Such a step would enhance morale, improve operational effectiveness, and further strengthen Nigeria’s overall security architecture.
