The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has recorded significant progress in the recovery operation and investigation into the crash of its ATR-42 aircraft in Igbokoda, Ondo State, following the successful retrieval of the aircraft’s Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR).
The Air Force confirmed that the recorder was recovered intact by technical teams working in collaboration with the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB). The development is expected to provide important information to investigators seeking to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident.
In addition to the CVR, part of the Flight Data Recorder (FDR), commonly known as the black box, has also been recovered. However, efforts are continuing to locate and retrieve the remaining section to facilitate a comprehensive technical examination.
The Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, disclosed that additional aircraft wreckage, engine components and human remains had also been recovered from the accident site.
He explained that recovery operations were continuing despite the difficult swampy terrain, with specialised teams working to retrieve outstanding components and preserve vital evidence for the investigation. He assured that the process would be conducted professionally to guarantee accurate and evidence based findings.
The Air Force also disclosed that the Directorate of Identification and Classification was handling the necessary procedures for the proper identification of recovered human remains. Meanwhile, the NAF said it remained in contact with the victims’ families and was engaging relevant authorities over environmental concerns raised by the host community.
While appreciating public interest and concern, the Air Force appealed for patience and understanding, stressing that the recovery and investigative processes required time, careful coordination and technical expertise. It maintained that the ultimate objective was to establish the actual circumstances surrounding the crash, identify any contributing factors and implement lessons that would strengthen aviation safety and protect the lives of military personnel and other citizens.
