President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a final six-month extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi.
The extension, which takes effect upon the expiration of his current tenure on August 1, 2026, will run until February 2027. According to the Presidency, the decision is intended to enable Adeniyi to consolidate ongoing reforms, particularly the implementation of the National Single Window project, while ensuring a smooth leadership transition within the Service.
During the extension period, Adeniyi will work closely with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to strengthen institutional processes, oversee the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs, and facilitate the retirement of officers who have reached the mandatory retirement age of 60 years or completed 35 years of service.
The Presidency noted that the extension will help maintain stability within the Service and ensure the continuity of key reform initiatives aimed at enhancing trade facilitation, revenue generation, and operational efficiency.
Adeniyi joined the Nigeria Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s. Over the years, he rose steadily through the ranks, becoming a Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, and Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020.
He was appointed Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023 and was subsequently named Comptroller-General of Customs by President Tinubu in June 2023. His tenure has been marked by a series of reforms focused on modernising customs operations and improving service delivery.
