The Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, has approved the dismissal and prosecution of an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Nuhu Usman, along with other officers, over the killing of a suspect in Efunrun, Delta State.
The decision follows the recommendation of the Force Disciplinary Committee after a review of the incident. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, said the committee found that the officer acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other existing regulations governing the use of firearms.
He stated that the Inspector General had endorsed the committee’s recommendation for the immediate dismissal of the officers found culpable and had forwarded the decision to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process.
The development comes after a video circulated on social media showing the suspect being shot while in custody in Efunrun.
In the footage, the suspect was seen seated on the ground with his hands tied behind his back. The incident triggered widespread public outrage, with calls for accountability and justice.
Earlier, the Delta State Police Command confirmed that the officer involved had been arrested and transferred to Abuja for disciplinary proceedings.
