Senator Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South Senatorial District, has raised concerns over the growing strength of Boko Haram insurgents, warning that terrorists appear better equipped than Nigerian troops in some conflict zones.

Ndume said the military is facing serious challenges due to inadequate weapons, equipment, and logistics, despite the courage and resilience of soldiers on the frontlines.

Speaking on a recent insurgent attack in Ngoshe, Ndume explained that troops were compelled to carry out a tactical withdrawal due to insufficient ammunition and lack of essential equipment such as Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles (MRAPs). He noted that the soldiers later regrouped and successfully reclaimed the area, although not without casualties.

According to him, the Nigerian Army remains gallant and determined, but is vulnerable without adequate equipment. He added that some soldiers lost their lives while defending their positions.

Ndume reiterated his earlier warning that parts of Borno State and the wider North-East could face greater threats if urgent steps are not taken to properly equip the military. He stated that while he regularly shares intelligence with security agencies, the major challenge remains inadequate equipment and firepower.

He noted that although the government is making efforts, more needs to be done to ensure that the armed forces are fully equipped to effectively confront insurgents.

The lawmaker further revealed that troops in areas such as Ngoshe and Pulka often lack sufficient arms, ammunition, and operational vehicles, making it difficult to withstand attacks. He stressed that with proper equipment and support, the military could defeat insurgents within a short period.

Ndume commended President Bola Ahmed for steps taken so far, including declaring a state of emergency on security, increasing recruitment into the armed forces, and expanding training facilities. However, he urged the President to intensify efforts by prioritising the provision of equipment and improving troop welfare.

He stated that while he acknowledges the President’s efforts, it is important to point out when those efforts are not sufficient.

The senator also highlighted the humanitarian situation in affected communities, noting that many residents of Gwoza have been displaced and are currently taking refuge in camps in Pulka. He said that although displaced persons are willing to return home, their communities must first be rebuilt and secured.

Ndume acknowledged that troop morale remains relatively high but is being affected by inadequate equipment and welfare challenges. He cited low salaries and limited allowances as additional issues facing personnel on the frontlines.

He proposed what he described as “TEAM” Training, Equipment, Ammunition, and Motivation as the key to addressing the insurgency. He also emphasised the need for stronger air support, including the deployment of more attack helicopters to conflict zones.

According to him, with proper training, equipment, and motivation, Nigerian troops are capable of defeating insurgents within a short time.

Ndume also acknowledged the efforts of the Borno State Government in supporting security operations but noted that the state lacks sufficient resources to sustain the fight. He therefore called on the federal government to take more decisive action by increasing funding and providing the military with the necessary tools to restore peace.
