The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has entered a new chapter as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, reappointed Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi for a second tenure of five years as Commandant General. This decision follows a remarkable first tenure that transformed the Corps into a more efficient, professional, and strategically positioned security institution.

During his first tenure, Professor Audi prioritized modernization of the NSCDC. He initiated the acquisition of new operational vehicles, advanced communication equipment, and field gear, significantly improving mobility and response time for officers across the country.

He also expanded the Corps’ operational reach. Under his leadership, the NSCDC strengthened its presence in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, ensuring faster and more coordinated responses to emergencies, disasters, and security threats.

One of the most notable achievements was the establishment and strengthening of specialized units within the Corps. The Mining Marshals, Fire Service units, and Special Rapid Response Teams became more effective, equipped, and strategically deployed to safeguard national assets.

During Professor Audi’s tenure, the Mining Marshals achieved landmark successes in curbing illegal mining activities. Over 500 illegal miners were arrested and more than 100 illegal mining sites were closed, resulting in the recovery of several tons of unlicensed solid minerals.

The Fire Service unit also received significant attention. Under his leadership, over 600 fire incidents were effectively managed nationwide, saving lives and property estimated at hundreds of millions of naira. The Corps’ rapid response capacity and professionalism earned public recognition.

Professor Audi also focused on personnel professionalization. He implemented continuous training programs, workshops, and capacity building initiatives, ensuring that officers adhered to international best practices in law enforcement, emergency response, and community engagement.

He championed institutional reforms that strengthened accountability and transparency within the NSCDC. Clear reporting structures and performance evaluation systems were introduced, which improved operational efficiency and public trust in the Corps.

The Commandant General placed a strong emphasis on intelligence gathering and community collaboration. By fostering trust with local communities, traditional rulers, and licensed operators, the NSCDC was able to receive actionable intelligence that led to the dismantling of organized criminal networks.

Under his leadership, the Corps successfully collaborated with other security agencies. Coordinated operations with the Nigeria Police Force, Armed Forces, and regulatory bodies resulted in more effective enforcement against illegal activities across the country.

Professor Audi also prioritized environmental protection in mining areas. By regulating mining activities and enforcing compliance, the NSCDC helped reduce environmental degradation, protect farmland, and safeguard water sources for host communities.

During his first tenure, the Corps also enhanced public awareness campaigns. These initiatives educated citizens on fire safety, disaster preparedness, and lawful mining practices, contributing to safer communities and stronger civic engagement.

The Commandant General successfully implemented a digitization agenda within the Corps. Operational data, case management, and reporting systems were modernized, allowing for better tracking of performance and improving evidence management for prosecutions.

Revenue protection was another focus area. By curbing illegal mining, smuggling, and unauthorized mineral exports, the Corps helped secure millions of naira in potential government revenue. This contributed to the broader national economic agenda.

Professor Audi’s leadership was marked by high moral and ethical standards. He promoted integrity, discipline, and professionalism, ensuring that officers acted responsibly while enforcing the law and engaging with communities.

He also encouraged the recognition of outstanding personnel. Officers demonstrating exceptional performance were publicly commended, boosting morale and reinforcing a culture of excellence within the Corps.

The Commandant General’s reforms extended to disaster management. The NSCDC became more effective in coordinating responses to floods, fire outbreaks, and industrial accidents, minimizing loss of life and property damage.

Professor Audi strengthened interagency coordination in border security and mineral transit monitoring. These efforts resulted in the interception of unlicensed mineral consignments and improved national resource protection.

The Corps also became a model for proactive security measures. Under his leadership, preventive patrols, rapid response drills, and community policing initiatives were intensified, reducing crime rates and improving public confidence in the NSCDC.

Looking ahead, Professor Audi’s second tenure is expected to build on these successes. His vision for further modernization, enhanced personnel capacity, and expanded specialized units promises sustained operational excellence and stronger national security.

With his proven track record, unwavering commitment, and strategic leadership, Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi is well positioned to guide the NSCDC into a new era of professionalism, community trust, and effective protection of lives and national assets.

In summary, the reappointment of Professor Audi represents continuity, confidence, and renewed momentum for the NSCDC. His leadership ensures that the Corps remains a pillar of national security and a model of efficiency, accountability, and innovation.
