The Ondo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has reiterated the importance of strengthening security and safeguarding measures within Nigeria’s education sector, particularly in the tutoring industry, to ensure the safety of both tutors and learners.
The State Commandant, Commandant Oluyemi Joshua Ibiloye, JP, delivered this message through the Head of the Safe School Unit, Deputy Commandant of Corps (DCC) Olakanse Folasade Olubunmi, during a seminar organised by the Association of Certified Tutors of Nigeria (ACTON), Ondo State Chapter. The event was held on August 26, 2026, at Mosco Pragmatic College Hall in Akure.
The seminar brought together certified tutors, education practitioners, tutorial centre operators, educational entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders to discuss the growth, professionalisation, standards, and responsibilities associated with the tutoring profession in Nigeria.
Representing the State Commandant, DCC Folasade delivered a lecture titled, “Safe Tutor, Safe Learner: Building a National Partnership for Security and Safeguarding in the Tutoring Industry.” She underscored the need to integrate safety and security into all aspects of tutoring and educational activities.
During the presentation, she highlighted critical areas for safeguarding learners, including regular risk assessments, implementation of practical safety measures, enhanced collaboration with the NSCDC, and registration on the National Safe School Response Coordination Platform.
She also sensitised participants on the shared responsibilities of tutors, parents, school proprietors, and other stakeholders in creating and maintaining safe learning environments. According to her, effective safeguarding requires collective commitment, vigilance, and proactive engagement from all parties involved in the education sector.
The seminar served as a vital platform for raising awareness among tutors and education stakeholders on the need to prioritise security as a fundamental component of the tutoring profession. Participants were urged to remain vigilant, promptly report suspicious activities, and adopt appropriate security measures within their tutorial centres and learning environments.
DCC Folasade further stressed the importance of sustained collaboration between ACTON and the NSCDC, particularly in the areas of safety awareness campaigns, risk assessment, threat reporting, and compliance with national school safety initiatives.
The engagement highlighted the NSCDC’s unwavering commitment to the protection of schools, tutors, and learners across Ondo State, while reinforcing the Corps’ role in supporting the Federal Government’s Safe School Programme.
Stakeholders at the seminar expressed appreciation for the Corps’ continuous efforts in promoting safety within educational institutions, noting that stronger partnerships between security agencies and education providers are essential for fostering secure and conducive learning environments.
The seminar is expected to deepen cooperation between the NSCDC and educational stakeholders, ultimately contributing to safer schools, improved learning conditions, and enhanced protection for learners and educators throughout Ondo State.
