Tragedy in Niger State as Mob Kills Police Officer and Torches Patrol Vehicle at Mining Site

A violent confrontation at a mining site in the Zunzungi area of Niger State has resulted in the death of a police officer and the destruction of government property. The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon when a routine patrol turned into a deadly encounter between security forces and a mob of suspected illegal miners.

The clash reportedly began around 1:45 pm on February 11, 2026, at a location belonging to Millennium Metals. Security reports indicate that personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were conducting a sweep of known illegal mining flashpoints when they intercepted a group of local youths. These individuals, often called “daba boys,” were allegedly excavating monazite, a mineral known locally as “zeiko.”

When the NSCDC officers attempted to confiscate the illegally mined materials, the situation escalated rapidly. The youths reportedly mobilized in large numbers and launched a coordinated assault on the security team.

During the chaos, the mob turned their aggression toward a police officer identified as PC Emmanuel Samson. The officer, who was attached to Mopol 12 of the Police Mobile Force in Minna, was part of the joint patrol team. Tragically, the attackers beat the officer to death before the team could successfully retreat.

In addition to the loss of life, the angry mob set fire to a Hilux patrol vehicle used by the security operatives, leaving it completely destroyed.

Security agencies in the state have expressed deep concern over the rising hostility toward personnel tasked with protecting natural resources. Investigations are currently underway to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible for the murder of the officer and the arson of the operational vehicle.
