The Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nasarawa State Command, Commandant Brah Samson Umoru, has trained 33 Community Volunteer Guards in Shabu, Lafia North Development Area, as part of sustained efforts to strengthen community-based security and enhance the protection of lives and property.
The training programme, held at the Sangarin Palace, Shabu, was designed to equip the volunteers with basic security skills, intelligence gathering techniques, community policing principles, and early-warning mechanisms to effectively complement the efforts of formal security agencies within the community and its environs.
Speaking at the event, Commandant Brah Samson Umoru emphasized the importance of community participation in security management, stressing that effective security begins at the grassroots. He noted that the Community Volunteer Guards are expected to serve as the eyes and ears of security agencies by promptly reporting suspicious activities and working closely with the NSCDC and other sister agencies to prevent crime.
According to him, the initiative aligns with the Corps’ statutory mandate of protecting critical national assets and infrastructure, as well as promoting peaceful coexistence at the community level.
The Commandant charged the volunteers to discharge their duties with utmost discipline, professionalism, and respect for human rights, warning that any form of misconduct would not be tolerated.
He further reaffirmed the commitment of the NSCDC Nasarawa State Command to sustained collaboration with communities in building a safer and more secure state, adding that similar training programmes would be extended to other parts of the state.
The Sangarin Shabu, Alhaji Mahmoud Umar Bwallah II, expressed appreciation to the NSCDC leadership for approving and conducting the training of the 33 Community Volunteer Guards, noting that the initiative would significantly address security challenges in Shabu and its environs.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Security and Sundry Matters, CP Usman Isa Baba (Rtd.), congratulated the volunteers for successfully completing the training. He reminded them that the community had entrusted them with its safety and charged them never to betray that trust, assuring them of the government’s strong support for the initiative.
