Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has donated ₦100 million, four two-bedroom housing units, and two utility vehicles to the Lagos State Council of the Nigerian Legion as part of activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
The governor also presented four cows, 500 bags of rice, and other food items to members of the Legion in support of military veterans and families of fallen heroes.
The donations were announced on Monday during the Emblem Appeal Fund launch for the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day at the Lagos House, Ikeja, held alongside a State Executive Council meeting.
According to a statement by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, the housing units are located in Ajara, while the vehicles are pick-up utility vans meant to support the Legion’s operations.
Speaking at the event, Sanwo-Olu described the annual Emblem Appeal as a long-standing national tradition and a constitutional responsibility to honour Nigeria’s fallen heroes.
“Our sovereignty as a nation exists because of the sacrifices of these brave men and women,” the governor said. “This appeal is our obligation to those who laid down their lives and to those who returned with life-changing injuries. We must remember them in real and tangible ways.”
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of Legion members, noting that the government would continue to respond positively to the yearly requests of the Nigerian Legion in Lagos State.
“This is our way of saying thank you for the sacrifices that allow us to live in a free and united country,” he added.
Earlier, the Commandant of the Lagos State Council of the Nigerian Legion, Akeem Wolimoh, commended Governor Sanwo-Olu and the state government for their sustained support.
He said previous interventions by the government had significantly improved the living conditions of Legion members, adding that some dependants had benefited from skill acquisition and empowerment programmes facilitated by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, as well as other state ministries, departments, and agencies.
The event was attended by the Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat; Secretary to the State Government, Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin; Head of Service, Bode Agoro; Chief of Staff, Tayo Ayinde; members of the State Executive Council; and officials of the Nigerian Legion.
Also present were senior security officers, including the Commander of the Sam Ethnan Air Force Base, Ikeja, Air Commodore M. A. Imam; Commander, 9 Brigade, T. A. Lagbaja Cantonment, Brigadier-General A. O. Owolabi; and Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, alongside other military personnel.
