The Nigerian Navy has officially commissioned a modernized and fully equipped Primary Health Care Centre in Ikaram Akoko, located within the Akoko North West Local Government Area of Ondo State. This project is a key component of the Chief of Naval Staff Special Intervention Quick Impact Project, aimed at enhancing civil military cooperation and driving grassroots development.
Designed to overhaul medical services for Ikaram and its neighboring communities, the intervention involved the total renovation and remodeling of the existing facility. To ensure reliable operations, the Navy installed a 10 kVA solar power system and provided an extensive array of modern medical and diagnostic tools.
Representing the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, Rear Admiral N.C. Ekwom highlighted that this initiative reflects the Navy’s commitment to national growth beyond its primary duty of maritime security. He noted that the Quick Impact Project was established to complement Federal Government efforts in improving the lives of citizens. Ekwom urged the local community to take full ownership of the facility, emphasizing that proper maintenance is essential for its long term success.
The upgraded diagnostic wing now features advanced technology, including ECG machines, X ray equipment, and digital microscopes. Rear Admiral Adefemi Kayode further explained that these tools would allow residents to access early disease detection and essential testing, such as genotype screening, without traveling long distances. He noted that such localized access is vital for preventing heart conditions and managing complications like sickle cell disease.
Expressing deep gratitude on behalf of his people, the Akala of Ikaram, Oba Andrew Momodu, described the project as a beacon of hope. He praised the Nigerian Navy for transforming the center into a facility that will significantly reduce the need for medical referrals and improve the overall well being of the Akoko region.
