The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has confirmed that its officers narrowly escaped a coordinated ambush by suspected terrorists in the Wawa area of Borgu Local Government.
State Commandant Suberu Siyaka-Aniviye briefed journalists in Minna on Wednesday, confirming that while the attackers caused significant property damage, no lives were lost. The assault occurred shortly after midnight when a large group of armed men attempted to overrun a security outpost.
According to the Commandant, the officers’ alertness prevented a massacre. However, the terrorists used the cover of darkness and superior numbers to gain a temporary advantage, using high-powered flashlights to target approaching personnel.
“Our men were forced to take tactical cover as the attackers opened fire sporadically,” Siyaka-Aniviye stated. During the retreat, the terrorists focused their fire on an abandoned operational vehicle, shattering the windscreen and puncturing all four tires.
While the personnel survived, the attackers looted personal belongings—including mobile phones and clothing—and managed to seize one service rifle. A tactical team deployed by NSCDC Commandant-General Ahmed Audi is currently combing the area to track the insurgents.
