University Graduate Killed in Suspected Cult-Related Shooting

A graduate of the Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State, has been shot dead in a suspected cult-related clash in the state.

The incident, which occurred on Friday, was reportedly linked to a violent confrontation between members of the Neo Black Movement, also known as Black Axe, and the Vikings confraternity, also referred to as DNKI.

The deceased, identified simply as Mark, was said to have been shot in the stomach during the attack. Efforts by friends and sympathisers to rush him to the hospital for urgent medical attention proved unsuccessful.

A source within the university disclosed that Mark was not the intended target of the attackers. According to the source, the gunmen, believed to be members of the Black Axe, opened fire on him after failing to locate their main target.

The source said the victim might have survived the shooting, but tragedy struck while he was being rushed to the hospital when the vehicle conveying him reportedly hit a speed bump and was involved in an accident, worsening his condition.

Friends of the deceased described him as calm, friendly and easygoing, noting that he avoided trouble and was always cheerful.

According to them, he was focused on making money and was not actively involved in cult activities. Some of his friends said they were not even aware of any cult links, as he often advised them to stay away from cultism.

Another source added that members of the Vikings confraternity had earlier advised him to leave the area, but he reportedly stayed because of his girlfriend.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in Bayelsa State, Musa Mohammed, confirmed the incident. He said the police have launched a discreet and thorough investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the killing and bring those responsible to justice.
