A tragic incident occurred on Thursday in the Oba Ile community of Akure North Local Government Area, Ondo State, as a mentally unstable 19-year-old man fatally stabbed an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
According to residents, the deceased officer and his colleague were invited by the suspect’s mother to help restrain her son, who had become violent earlier in the day. Trouble began when the operatives attempted to chain the teenager to prevent him from harming anyone in the neighbourhood.
An eyewitness explained that during the struggle, the suspect overpowered one of the NSCDC officers, seized his knife, and stabbed him. Despite being armed, the officer could not defend himself in the chaos.
“It was unfortunate,” the witness said. “Even though the officer had a gun, he could not control the situation before the boy attacked him.”
Confirming the incident, the NSCDC Public Relations Officer in Ondo State, Daniel Aidamenbor, described the event as deeply regrettable. He said the officer was attempting to escort the suspect to a treatment facility when the attack occurred.
Similarly, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, disclosed that the NSCDC officer died from his injuries while receiving treatment at the hospital.
The suspect has since been taken into custody as investigations continue.
