Six Killed, Eight Injured in Fatal Road Accident Along Yobe Highway

The Yobe State Police Command has confirmed the death of six travellers and injuries to eight others in a fatal accident along the Potiskum–Fika Road on Thursday afternoon.

According to the Command, the crash occurred around Maiduwa Junction at about 3:00 p.m. on October 17, 2025, when a Sharon bus with registration number PKM 549 YZ, driven by Adamu Hassan, lost control and veered off the road. The vehicle was reportedly conveying passengers from Potiskum to Bajoga in Funakaye Local Government Area of Gombe State.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, preliminary investigations revealed that the accident was caused by excessive speeding, reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, and possible drug influence on the part of the driver.

Police officers from the Motor Traffic Department (MTD) of Fika Division quickly arrived at the scene to rescue the victims. The injured passengers were rushed to the General Hospital, Fika, where a medical doctor confirmed six persons dead on arrival.

“The Command attributes this unfortunate incident to overspeeding, reckless and dangerous driving, unnecessary overtaking, and drug abuse by some commercial drivers,” the statement partly read.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Ado, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured victims. He also warned motorists against reckless driving and cautioned that anyone caught violating road safety regulations would face the full wrath of the law.

The Command urged drivers, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), and other stakeholders to intensify public awareness campaigns on road safety and the dangers of drug abuse among commercial drivers.

Members of the public were further advised to promptly report cases of reckless or intoxicated driving to the nearest police station for immediate intervention.
