The Department of State Services (DSS) has released two journalists from Jay 101.9 FM in Jos, Plateau State, who were wrongfully arrested on Saturday, October 4, 2025, during President Bola Tinubu’s visit for the burial of the mother of Professor Nentawe Yilwatda Goshwe, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
A reliable source close to the DSS told Forefront News that upon learning about the wrongful arrest of Ms. Ruth Marcus and Ms. Keshia Jang, the Director-General of the Service, Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi, immediately ordered their release.
Following their release, the DSS reportedly reached out to the National President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, to express the Director-General’s sincere apologies over the incident.
The source added that Mr. Ajayi assured the NUJ President that the new DSS leadership values press freedom and recognizes the vital role of the media in a democratic society. He also directed a full investigation into the matter, promising that any officer found responsible would face disciplinary action.
According to the source, “The DG is committed to correcting past mistakes within the Service, including issues of overzealousness. He has made it clear that whenever the DSS errs, the right thing must be done — including offering apologies and, when necessary, compensating affected persons.”
The source further recalled that the current DSS leadership had previously apologised to the management of TVC following reports of harassment involving one of its reporters, reaffirming the DG’s dedication to human rights and media freedom.
