The National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has accused Sayyu Dantata, half-brother of Aliko Dangote and owner of MS Group, of inviting the Nigerian Navy to intimidate its members.
The allegation comes as NUPENG issued a red alert to members and affiliate unions, warning of a possible fresh strike against the Dangote Group and its associates.
In a statement released on Thursday, Williams Akporeha, NUPENG’s National President, alleged that Dangote Group and its allies were working to undermine resolutions earlier brokered by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Dingyadi, alongside the Department of State Security (DSS).
The union claimed that Dantata directed truck drivers longstanding members of NUPENG’s Petroleum Tanker Drivers branch to remove union stickers from their vehicles, a move it described as a violation of the agreed settlement.
“Sayyu Dantata flew over them several times with his helicopter and then called the Navy of the Federal Republic to come over ostensibly to crush the union officials. Our members are waiting for him and his agents to run them over,” the statement read.
NUPENG had earlier suspended its strike action, which began on Monday, to protest what it described as anti-labour practices by the Dangote Group
