Train derailment: Nigerian Army deserves commendation

Pix: Army Chief, Gen. Oluyede

I was on the Abuja-Kaduna train that derailed on 26 August 2025 and was highly impressed by the prompt and effective response by the Nigerian Army. I was on a personal trip to Kaduna along with my son, Al’Ameen. We boarded the train at the Idu Station in Abuja heading toward Kubwa.

Upon arriving in Kubwa, we were told there would be a 45-minute delay. A train coming from Kaduna had experienced a fault, which meant the tracks would not be clear for us until it arrived. We finally took off again, and everything seemed normal.

Then, at around 11:00am, there was a loud sound and our carriage swayed violently. I looked out the window and saw the carriages in front of us derailing and falling by the sides. There was panic. Passengers gripped their seats screaming, as the carriages lurched. We were so scared.

It wasn’t long before the train came to a complete stop. People were understandably terrified. For one, we had no idea what caused the accident. And then, this was an area known for bandits’ activity. Back in March 2022, bandits bombed the same Abuja-Kaduna rail tracks and abducted many passengers. The Nigerian Railway Corporation needs to do more in the areas of infrastructure, maintenance, and security to regain the confidence of Nigerians.

Amidst the fear and panic, I composed myself and immediately sent our location to an army contact, Colonel M.H. Abdullahi, and informed him of the accident. His response was swift and reassuring: ‘My men will be with you soon. I’m on my way too.’

And true to his word, just about 25 minutes later, the Nigerian Army arrived and there was a sense of relief among passengers. The soldiers worked tirelessly to help passengers and provide medical assistance to those injured. Led by Colonel M.H. Abdullahi and supported by Lt Col J.M. Abdulkarim, Commanding Officer 102 Guards Battalion, the soldiers were a beacon of hope in our time of need. Their bravery and professionalism were truly commendable.

Subsequently, Major General A.S.M. Wase, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division, Nigerian Army, visited the scene to oversee the operations, boost the morale of the troops, and personally reassure passengers of their safety. His presence further underscored the seriousness with which the Nigerian Army treated the incident.

The prompt response of the Nigerian Army is a testament to their unwavering commitment to serving and protecting the nation. I later learned that this was not the first time Colonel Abdullahi had provided swift support during previous train incidents. For his selfless actions and leadership, I believe he deserves a national award.

The efforts of the men and women of the Nigerian Army undoubtedly saved lives and brought relief to those affected. Their actions that day demonstrated their dedication to upholding the values of service, sacrifice, and compassion. They are more than just an institution. They are guardians of the people.

As a nation, we owe a profound debt of gratitude to the Nigerian Army. Their response to this incident should serve to reaffirm the trust between the military and the citizenry.
