A Chinese national has been abducted and eight officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have been killed in a deadly ambush by gunmen in Okpella, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State.

The violent attack occurred near the entrance gate of the BUA Cement Company, where the officers were reportedly escorting five Chinese expatriates back to their base following a routine patrol. The assailants, said to be heavily armed, opened fire on the security operatives, killing eight on the spot.

In addition to the fatalities, four other NSCDC personnel and one civilian sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

According to reliable sources, the attack happened around 10:30 p.m. on Friday, September 5, 2025, along the Okpella–Agenebode road. One of the Chinese nationals was kidnapped during the assault, while four others were rescued unharmed.

The NSCDC has officially confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Saturday, describing the attack as a tragic loss and promising that efforts are underway to rescue the abducted expatriate and apprehend the culprits.

This deadly assault highlights the escalating security threats in industrial zones and the growing risks faced by security personnel and expatriates across the country.
