The Nigerian Navy has dismissed a serving Lieutenant and sentenced him to three years’ imprisonment for engaging in a sexual relationship with a colleague’s wife.
The disciplinary action followed the outcome of a Special Court Martial (SCM) convened at the Naval Headquarters in Abuja, which found the officer guilty on multiple charges.
According to military sources, the SCM concluded that the officer was guilty as charged and, on November 23, 2024, sentenced him to both dismissal and imprisonment. The verdict was formally carried out on Friday, August 29, 2025, at the Nigerian Navy Institute of Technology (NNIT) Parade Ground, Sapele.
The dismissed officer faced four counts, including:
- Sexual relations with a service personnel’s wife, contrary to Section 79 of the Armed Forces Act (AFA), CAP A20 LFN 2004.
- Scandalous conduct of an officer, contrary to Section 91 of the AFA.
- Deceiving a witness, contrary to Section 122 of the Criminal Code Act, CAP C380, pursuant to Section 114 of the AFA (repeated twice in the charge list).
A legal review confirmed that the trial complied with due process and that the accused was properly arraigned. The Navy Board later upheld both the imprisonment and dismissal of the officer.
