The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has clarified that the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, did not call on Nigerians to bear arms but rather to acquire basic self-defence and survival skills.
The clarification was issued yesterday by the Acting Director of Defence Information, Brigadier-General Tukur Gusau, following remarks made by the CDS during an interview on Channels Television on Thursday.
General Musa, in the interview, encouraged Nigerians to learn essential self-protection skills, comparing them to everyday life skills such as driving, swimming, judo, taekwondo, and boxing.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the CDS did not call for citizens to bear arms or engage in unlawful possession of firearms. He is fully aware of Nigerian laws prohibiting unauthorised carrying of weapons,” Gusau explained.
He stressed that the CDS’ message was aimed at promoting resilience, situational awareness, and lawful preparedness—not encouraging illegal activity.
Gusau also highlighted the steady progress of the Armed Forces and other security agencies in the fight against insecurity across the country. “These gains reflect the government’s sustained commitment to protecting citizens and maintaining peace and stability,” he noted.
He further assured Nigerians that their safety remains a top priority, while emphasizing the importance of security consciousness. “Basic skills such as unarmed self-defence, swimming, and driving are valuable life skills that enhance individual preparedness and contribute to national security,” he added.
The DHQ urged the public to rely on authentic sources when interpreting official statements and to avoid spreading distorted or misleading narratives.
