The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT has officially handed over 45 bags of cannabis sativa estimated to weigh approximately 1,575 kilogrammes—to the Marine Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The handover follows a successful operation conducted on July 4 by NNS BEECROFT’s Quick Response Team, which intercepted two wooden boats suspected of transporting narcotics near the Takwa Bay and Ilesha Beach axis in Lagos State.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Navy disclosed that the suspected drug traffickers fled upon spotting the patrol team, abandoning the boats and their illegal cargo. The contraband was later recovered intact by the naval operatives.
Speaking during the official transfer, the Commander of NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Paul P. Nimmyel—represented by the Executive Officer, Captain Idongesit Udoessien—explained that the seizure reflects ongoing efforts by the Nigerian Navy under the leadership of Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, to combat drug trafficking and other illicit activities within Nigeria’s maritime environment.
Captain Udoessien praised the professionalism and vigilance displayed by the naval personnel involved in the operation. He also urged members of the public to support security agencies with timely and credible information to enhance national safety.
The seized consignment was received on behalf of the NDLEA by Deputy Commander of Narcotics, Emmanuel Morrison, for further investigation and necessary action.
This development further underscores the Nigerian Navy’s continued collaboration with sister security agencies in its mission to maintain security and enforce the law across Nigeria’s territorial waters.
