July 6 is not just another date on the calendar; it is a moment of national reflection and pride. It marks a time to honour the bravery, sacrifices, and unwavering dedication of the Nigerian Army. These are men and women who serve not for personal recognition, but in steadfast commitment to their nation.
To truly appreciate the strength and stature of today’s Nigerian Army, it is important to revisit its origins. The journey began in 1863 with the formation of the Glover Hausas—a small paramilitary unit established to safeguard British trade interests in Lagos.
As Nigeria advanced toward independence, its military institutions also evolved. By 1956, the Army had transformed into a structured national force, emerging from the Royal West African Frontier Force to become the protector of a newly sovereign nation.
