Urges Students to Speak Out, Reinforces Safe Schools Drive
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has affirmed its determination to intensify efforts against child molestation within the region, describing the rise in such incidents as “alarming and unacceptable.”
The statement was issued on Monday by FCT Commandant, Dr. Olusola Odumosu, as he welcomed students from ECWA Hill Academy, Maitama, during an educational tour of the Corps’ headquarters in Wuse Zone 5, Abuja.
“Aside from our core responsibility of guarding critical national assets and infrastructure, our Anti‑Trafficking and Gender Units work relentlessly to shield children from sexual abuse, trafficking, and even organ harvesting,” the Commandant said.
Dr. Odumosu disclosed that a disturbing case involving a father and his nine‑year‑old daughter is currently under investigation by the FCT Command.
“This level of moral depravity—inflicted upon minors, especially girls—is deeply distressing. We are committed to confronting it decisively and ensuring that no perpetrator escapes justice,” he declared.
The Commandant further appealed to students to remain alert and to report any inappropriate conduct, emphasizing that it should not be ignored—even if a family member is involved.
“Do not remain silent. Raise your voice. Your courage can be a powerful defence,” he stated.
Dr. Odumosu also provided a brief history of the Corps. He explained that the NSCDC originated in 1967 as the Lagos Civil Defence Committee during the civil war with the mission of educating citizens on personal safety in times of conflict. Subsequently, it was transformed into a paramilitary organisation through legislation in 2003, with a significant amendment in 2007.
In his address, the FCT Commandant admonished the students to take their studies seriously, encouraging them to labour diligently and bring pride to their families and the nation.
Dr. Odumosu underscored the NSCDC’s alignment with the Federal Government’s Safe School Initiative, promising sustained vigilance over the safety of students, teachers, and educational infrastructure throughout the FCT.
Commenting on the excursion, ECWA Hill Academy tutor and expedition leader, Mr. Angbulu Joshua, commended the warm reception and enriching educational experience provided by the Corps, noting that the visit was designed to broaden students’ practical understanding of national security functions.
