Borno: Boko Haram Insurgent Surrenders to Troops, Hands Over RPG and Explosive Device

By Samuel Ike, Abuja

A suspected Boko Haram insurgent has surrendered to troops of the Joint Task Force North-East, Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), in Pulka, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, handing over a Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG) launcher and an improvised explosive device (IED).

The insurgent reportedly surrendered at about 9:20 a.m. on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, amid intensified military operations targeting terrorist groups across the North-East region.

The Acting Media Information Officer of the Headquarters Joint Task Force North-East, Operation Hadin Kai, Captain Mohammed Goni, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday.

According to Goni, preliminary investigations revealed that the surrendered insurgent had been operating within the Mandara Mountains corridor, a notorious hideout for terrorist elements along the Nigeria-Cameroon border.

He noted that the development reflects the growing pressure being mounted on terrorist groups through sustained military offensives, intelligence-driven operations, and coordinated clearance missions across the theatre of operation.

Military authorities stated that the surrendered fighter is currently undergoing profiling and further debriefing in line with established procedures, while the recovered weapons and explosive materials have been taken into custody for examination and documentation.

Operation Hadin Kai has continued to record successes in its counter-insurgency campaign, with troops sustaining aggressive operations aimed at dismantling terrorist networks, recovering weapons, and encouraging the surrender of insurgents willing to renounce violence.

Security analysts believe that the increasing number of defections and surrenders among insurgents is a testament to the effectiveness of ongoing military operations and the declining operational capacity of terrorist groups in the North-East.
