Troops of the Nigerian Army have confirmed the killing of a notorious terror suspect identified as Auta during a military operation in Zamfara State on June 10.
According to counter-intelligence analyst Zagalo Makama, who disclosed the development via his X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday, the operation took place in Kunchi Kalgo town, Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The operation was part of a larger offensive under the code name Operation Forest Yakin, aimed at dismantling terror networks in the region.
Makama stated that two other individuals, identified as Abdul Jamilu and a third person known simply as Salisu, were also killed in the firefight. He said the military unit involved encountered strong resistance but ultimately neutralised several members of the terror group.
“The troops launched a coordinated assault that led to the elimination of Auta and his associates in a gun battle,” Makama posted. “Salisu and Abdul Jamilu, both close to Auta, were also confirmed dead.”
During the operation, another high-profile target, known as Babaye, reportedly went missing. Makama said it is not yet confirmed whether Babaye was killed or escaped. An unidentified associate is also unaccounted for.
The son of a prominent bandit, Sale Ado Madele, reportedly evaded arrest by fleeing through nearby farmland during the encounter. “He disguised himself among local farmers and escaped,” Makama added.
Following the incident, Makama noted that local terror factions have mobilised their sympathisers in search of Babaye and others unaccounted for.
“Intelligence reports suggest heightened concern among the terrorist ranks due to the growing number of casualties in recent army operations,” Makama said.
Zamfara State has remained a hotspot for armed banditry and terror-related activities. Several armed groups in the area have continued to engage in cattle rustling, extortion, abduction, and violent clashes with security forces.
