SPORTSMANSHIP AND PROFESSIONALISM ON FULL DISPLAY AS 1 DIVISION WINS NIGERIAN ARMY BALL GAMES 2025

The Nigerian Defence Academy Sports Complex, Ribadu Cantonment Kaduna, was abuzz with excitement as the Nigerian Army Ball Games 2025 came to a close on 16 May 2025. The five-day sporting events, which commenced on 12 May 2025, witnessed the participation of about 250 personnel drawn from various formations across the Nigerian Army. The competition featured thrilling contests in football , handball, volleyball, and basketball, all geared towards enhancing the physical and mental resilience of troops.

In a display of exceptional professionalism, sportsmanship, and passion, the personnel of 1 Division Nigerian Army emerged victorious in the competition, clinching the top spot with an impressive haul of 5 gold and 1 silver medals. The team’s outstanding performance was a testament to their dedication, teamwork, and commitment to excellence. Their triumph was also met with jubilation from their supporters, who cheered them on with unbridled enthusiasm.

Representing the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede NAM, the Commandant Nigerian Defence Academy, Major General Abdul Khalifa Ibrahim, declared the competition closed. In his address, Major General Ibrahim underscored the paramount importance of the Ball Games in fostering physical fitness and esprit de corps amongst personnel. “The Ball Games serve as a platform to showcase team spirit, mutual respect, discipline, and courage, which are vital attributes for operational readiness,” he stated. “This competition not only tests the participants’ sportsmanship but also reflects the cohesion, agility, cooperation, expertise, and professionalism inherent within the Nigerian Army, all of which contribute significantly to mission success.”

The final standings of the competition saw Army Headquarters Garrison in second position with 2 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze medals, and 6 Division in third position with 1 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze medals. The other formations that participated include 2 Division in fourth position with 3 silver and 1 bronze medals, 4 Special Forces Command in fifth position with 1 silver medal, 81 Division in sixth position with 1 bronze medal, 8 Division in seventh position with 1 bronze medal, 82 Division in eighth position with 1 bronze medal, and 3 Division in ninth position.

The Nigerian Army Ball Games 2025 will undoubtedly contribute to the Nigerian Army’s operational readiness and mission success, as it continues to foster a culture of excellence and teamwork among its personnel.The representative of the COAS extended his congratulations to the victorious 1 Division team, urging them to maintain their high standards. He also encouraged other participants to learn from the competition and strive for excellence in future events. As the event came to a close, it was clear that the real winners were the Nigerian Army and its people, who were treated to a spectacle that embodied the very spirit of sportsmanship and professionalism.

The closing ceremony was a grand affair, featuring vibrant cultural displays that showcased the rich heritage of Nigeria. The presentation of medals and awards to deserving formations and individual players was the highlight of the event, with the winners beaming with pride as they received their accolades. The exchange of souvenirs with distinguished guests and group photographs also added a touch of warmth and camaraderie to the occasion.
