The Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr Ahmed Audi, has ordered the immediate detention of officers allegedly involved in the extortion of N5.2 million from some youths travelling through Ekiti State.

The disciplinary action followed a directive from the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who on Tuesday called for a full investigation into the disturbing incident captured in a viral video. The footage reportedly shows NSCDC personnel extorting money from a young man en route from Ekiti State to Akure, the Ondo State capital.

In a statement issued by the Corps’ Public Relations Officer, Babawale Afolabi, Dr Audi described the conduct of the operatives as “unprofessional,” noting that it violated the NSCDC’s Code of Ethics and Standard Operating Procedure.

“The Corps condemns this act in strong terms. It is a clear breach of the trust reposed in our officers and runs contrary to the values we uphold,” Dr Audi said.

He further directed that the implicated officers be transferred to the NSCDC National Headquarters in Abuja for detention, pending the outcome of a full disciplinary investigation led by a committee constituted by the federal government.

Dr Audi assured Nigerians that the Corps would not tolerate any form of corruption or abuse of power among its ranks. He emphasized that any officer found culpable would be punished in line with the Public Service Rules.

“If found guilty, they will face the full weight of disciplinary action as stipulated by law. The NSCDC will not shield anyone involved in corrupt practices or compromise,” he stated.

While acknowledging the gravity of the allegations, the Commandant General urged the public not to lose confidence in the Corps. He encouraged citizens to continue cooperating with the NSCDC by sharing relevant information that could enhance the Corps’ service delivery.

“We remain committed to protecting lives and property and will not allow the unprofessional behavior of a few to tarnish the integrity of the entire Corps,” he added.

The Corps reiterated its dedication to upholding accountability, professionalism, and public trust in the discharge of its duties.
